As Spring approaches across the country, here are a few tips to help your loved ones that may be dealing with memory loss.
1. Get outside-fresh air and sunshine do wonders for behaviors and overall mental well being
2. Share some time to plant a potted flower-engauge the resident to help you and make it a point to include them when watering or pruning.
3. Exercise if possible-walking even a short distance is a great outlet for residents who tend to have sundowners or get restless as the days get longer.
4. Take a field trip-short trips to lunch, a ball game, a movie ect. are all great day excursions. Avoid overnite trips as they can cause more confusion.
5. Have visitors-familiar faces often help moods and health for those with dementia. They may not remember your name but they do remember you. Share stories of memories you both share....trust us, this is good for you both.
6. With increased temperatures comes the need to stay vigilent with hydration...be sure to get plenty of water. Fruits like watermelon are also a great snack over the summer months.
We all age and our memories fade but doing a few basic things can really impact the quality of life of a loved one suffering from memory and mobility loss.
